How Books are Graded

Our hardcover books are graded as follows. The book and the dustjacket are graded separately (i.e. VG/F etc.,). The book (VG) being listed first and the dustjacket (F) listed second.

VERY FINE (VF)

Describes a book that is in the same immaculate, tight, crisp condition as when published. There can be no flaws and the dustjacket (if issued) must be perfect. We only very rarely use this grade.

FINE (F)

Does not have the crispness of one that is Very Fine, but must also not have any flaws. If the dustjacket is slightly worn or if there are any small tears, these must be noted.

VERY GOOD (VG)

May show some small signs of wear / handling, but must not have any tears to the binding or paper. Any defects must be included in the description.

GOOD (G)

Describes the average used and worn book. However, all pages and plates must be present. All flaws must be noted.

FAIR (Fair)

Describes a book that is worn and has complete text pages, but that may be missing endpapers, half-title page, etc. The binding and dustjacket (if present) may also be worn. A book in this condition should only be considered a Reading Copy. As always, all flaws will be included in the description.

POOR (P)

Should only be considered a Reading Copy. The text should be complete and legible, but maps and plates may be missing, as noted. It may also be soiled, stained, spotted and may have loose joints, hinges or pages.

Book Club Editions and Ex-Library copies will always be noted in our descriptions.

Mass Market Paperbacks are graded slightly differently. We use Hancer's Guide as a grading reference. If you have any questions, please contact us.

If so, we will notify you before processing the order, to make sure you want to continue with the purchase. On the other hand, for particularly light-weight books, we may reduce the shipping cost before processing the order.
